I’m not sure if it is the most common topic of blog posts, but it is certainly common for bloggers to write about what it means to blog.  This self-reflection activity, like this series of blog examples, is well captured by one of the students in this Learning is Messy post by Brian Crosby.

Students should blog because they can tell people what happens at there school and outside of school. If anyone takes the privilege of blogging away from students. I will fight for blogging until we get it back.

Mrs. Ross’ Second Grade Class is an example of a blog that provides support for parents.  This is especially helpful when schools are slowly transitioning to something completely foreign to the experience parents had when they were in school.

This blog was created to ease your homework stress and give students extra support at home through various websites and activities.

The PrincipalsPage is an anonymous blog that provides an outlet for a K-12 administrator.  It is important to laugh, and also to pass along those benefits to others.  If you are in need of a lift, try the PrincipalsPage.

Mrs. Tolisano, from the San Jose Episcopal Day School in Jacksonville, Florida, has set up a blog called Teddy Bears Around the World.  Visit the link below if you would like to participate. For those of you who have participated in a Flat Stanley project before, this should be familiar ground.

This blog will provide the space to hang out and communicate with different teddy bears around the world to hear more about their lives and adventures. This will allow our students to see each other’s countries, customs and traditions through the eyes of our “teddy bears” and open their horizons through a more global perspective.

Blog Example #17 - Classroom Discussions January 2, 2008

Sometimes students are intimidated by a classroom of their peers and are reluctant to talk in front of others.  Making judicious use of a blog is one way to allow participation on the part of all students.  In this post on the Morey Matters blog from M. Dame, students contribute their own ideas on what skills they think are most important for the 21st century.  The comments from the students are insightful and who better to ask than those who will need the skills themselves?  Here are a couple of examples:

The internet has a vast amount of information, some of it creditable and some of it not. As research on the internet is necessary for completing high school, not to mention collage, it is important to learn how to find creditable information among the vast amount of junk.

It is important to know how to send a formal email because you cannot talk to a dean or someone from a future school you want to attend in shorthand. It’s not acceptable to say “im glad 2 apply 4 dis skool.”

To be successful in this generation you must need to know how to operate simple machines. It comes easy to us, but if you have the capacity to learn more you should. It will come in handy throughout the rest of your life.

I think that the children of today need to be able to design applications for computers as well as be able to fix and build one.

Blogs that talk about blogs are a little like podcasts on how to create podcasts. They serve a useful purpose for those who are interested in getting started. One way for a blog to connect with other blogs is to include links to them. In Edublogs, this is done by including a blogroll. Russel Montgomery, in his blog: Wise Provocation, includes a nice lengthy collection of educational blogs in his blogroll. Take a look and explore some interesting blogs!

Susan, a technology teacher in Denver, uses her blog, Technology Training for Swansea Teachers, as a venue for communicating tech announcement, updates, and tidbits for her staff at Swansea Elementary. Her use of a blog for communicating is also a great way to model effective practices for her teachers.

Professional learning communities are a terrific way for teachers to engage in a dialogue to improve the craft of their teaching. Too often, they are only effective when the participants are all gathered together in one place. Too often, there isn’t enough time to meet. A new Edublogs blog, In Practice, is one effort to provide a forum for a learning community, to keep the dialogue moving forward.

Blogs often include an easy way to upload and host media files, such as podcasts. Our City Podcast may or may not actually be a blog, but it serves as a nice example of a collection of student podcasts. Each episode is a specific type of podcast called a city podcast, or an episode dedicated to information about a specific city.

Room 208, sponsored by Bob Sprankle, might be a better example, but he moved on to be the tech integrator at Wells Elementary. While he was the teacher in room 208, his students were frequent podcasters. http://bobsprankle.com/blog/C1697218367/index.html

Wells Elementary also has a repository of student podcasting. From their home page, click the link for “Featured Work.” http://www.weskids.com/

Rohit Bhargava and Jesse Thomas from 360º Digital Influence have posted a SlideShare entitled: “The 25 Basic Styles of Blogging” which fits in well with the educational blog examples I’m posting here. These are not specific to education, but could easily spark ideas for types of blogs that can be used in the classroom. For example, one blog style in the Slideshare is interview blogging where you conduct an interview and post either the transcript or audio/video. This could easily be a part of a classroom unit learning about local history by interviewing people from the community. Check out the Slideshare and see if you come up with your own ideas.
