Just How Big Is The Internet? July 28, 2008

I’m not sure anyone knows just how big the Internet really is, but Google has crossed a milestone of sorts. They now track over 1 trillion unique web addresses. That’s a 1 with 12 zeros. At this rate, it will still be quite some time before Google hits 1 google addresses. That’s a 1 with 100 zeros. Maybe that is the threshold for a sentient Internet.

China Overtakes USA July 28, 2008

Recently, China overtook the US in numbers of people connected to the Internet. That should come as a surprise owing to the differences in population. It shouldn’t be too much longer before India reaches the same milestone. What remains to be seen is how the Internet will change as a result.

Really cool .TV math tutorial videos presented by the teacher and students of Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica, CA. What a great way for students to demonstrate their learning! This could be done with any subject at any grade level.

One Internet Device Per Child July 21, 2008

TechCrunch is proposing a simple web tablet device that looks like the screen portion of a Mac Book Air but with a coloring style that reminds me of the original iMac. It might make a good addition to the backpack I mentioned in my last post. $200 is the target price for this edition of hardware that we wished existed but doesn’t. If it does get built, I wonder how much it might cost, and whether or not there will be a kit that can be purchased to build my own. The article suggests that Firefox act as the OS, but I’m not sure we need to kill off the desktop just yet. Maybe we should make the OS more like a backpack instead of a desktop though.

School Supply List 2.0 July 20, 2008
Posted by Matthew Woolums in 21st-Century, Opinion.2 comments
My family went shopping for back-to-school supplies today. Even though school doesn’t start for a few more weeks, year-round schools need supplies, and the local big box stores are happy to put items on sale. Shinny new notebooks, pencils, pens, crayon boxes - I always wanted to upgrade to the one with the built-in sharpener, folders, a lot of paper, and more. Stacks and stacks of erasers, rulers, lunch boxes, and reams of paper.
All of which got me thinking. What should a student 2.0 include in his or her backpack to be prepared for the school of tomorrow? Here’s what I would include. Feel free to add your own ideas in the comments.
- wireless laptop - include virus protection, a flexible filter, and free Internet access from anywhere
- blog for self-reflection
- wiki for group work
- online word processor/spreadsheet/presentation applications
- access to a social network
- RSS reader to keep up with assignments and classmates’ work
- opportunities to connect with students across the globe
- assignments that have a chance to affect change in the world around them
- notebook with unlined paper to draw/write/web express themselves
- a favorite book to share with other
- science probes to connect to laptop
- video camera
- audio recording/playback device
