My first attempt to UStream an event was quite a learning experience. First of all, there seem to be a lot of ’start broadcast’ buttons to push before you actually start broadcasting. Second, and more importantly, there is a big difference between ’start broadcasting’ and ’start recording’. Looks like the broadcast is now only a part of Internet history, but with no remaining artifact.

I was recording a video conferencing session between a school here in Colorado, and another in Washington. The two classes exchange letters through out the year, and cap it off with a video conference at the end of the year. Kind of fun. This was the second year we did this. Next year, maybe I’ll know how to have it recorded as is happens so anyone can stop in and see what we did!

PC World has pictures of the proposed 2nd generation XO, the laptop part of the One Laptop Per Child project. It looks really cool. Instead of a keyboard, it has a software-based touch screen. It reminds be of the Nintendo DS. The unit can be flipped to the side to hold like a book. Best of all, the target price is only $75. Don’t get your credit cards out quite yet though. The XO-2 isn’t expected to be available until 2010.

Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1 May 19, 2008

Taking the latest version of Firefox out for a spin, and I have to say it is very fast! So far everything seems to be working like a charm. I have noticed that embedded YouTube videos in Google Reader are showing up like a missing plugin (for which no suitable plugin can be found) but the videos work as expected when I click on the Popout link. If you haven’t tried Firefox before, you definitely should now. If you rely of Firefox for day-to-day use, you might want to try it also, but remember that a release candidate is not necessarily as stable as the actual finished version. As with all technology, your mileage may vary.
