In the ongoing pursuit of cheap computers, here is a Yahoo! News report from Joe McDonald, an AP Business Writer about Lenovo and their efforts to find a market in rural China. This isn’t a laptop like the One Laptop per Child movement, but cheap anyway.

Tweet Tweet August 4, 2007

Will Richardson posted a funny look at Twitter. If you haven’t hear of Twitter yet, think of texting mashed together with RSS. That means that anyone can subscribe, or listen in, to your short, momentary messages, called tweets. In fact, you don’t even have to send your text to anyone in particular, so in that respect Twitter is a little like a short blog post. Having spent more time recently texting with my kids, I’m starting to get it. I’m not sure there is a unique educational model here yet, but there may be one in the tweeting medium somewhere.

Rohit Bhargava and Jesse Thomas from 360º Digital Influence have posted a SlideShare entitled: “The 25 Basic Styles of Blogging” which fits in well with the educational blog examples I’m posting here. These are not specific to education, but could easily spark ideas for types of blogs that can be used in the classroom. For example, one blog style in the Slideshare is interview blogging where you conduct an interview and post either the transcript or audio/video. This could easily be a part of a classroom unit learning about local history by interviewing people from the community. Check out the Slideshare and see if you come up with your own ideas.

The Savvy Technologist, one of the earliest educational podcasters I ever found, is promoting an educational podcast directory called Conference Connections. You can find podcasts from FETC, NECC, and TCEA conferences. If you can’t get to these conferences, you can still benefit from some very important conversations and presentations.

Virtual play. Show Rabbit is a blog created by kids where you can create your own rabbit, enter it into contests, and buy and sell rabbits. All of this is built entirely from imagination. There are no actual animals involved. What could your students come up with if given a space like this, some time and guidance, and their own limitless imagination?

Communication. Mrs. McLaughlin is using her blog to communicate with her students even when school is not in session. This is a great way to connect with her students, gives them an opportunity to get to know each other, and establish a positive culture for her classroom.

Blogs are also a great way to facilitate book talks. Students in this example from “Exploring the Gothic for A2″ respond to their readings from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Blogs also make wonderful repositories for student work. This makes it easy to extend the audience outside of the four walls of the classroom. The Coffey Crew, a blog for a second grade classroom, has a nice collection of presentations students put together hosted on SlideShare.

Dangerously Irrelevant has posted a new listing of the top edublogs for 2007. This is an interesting look at the process behind creating the list, which includes combining rank and authority. I think it is an interesting inside look at how data can be used in different ways to yield different results. This blog comes in at number 1944 out of 3634.
